Sykeonlu Theodoros’un Hayat Hikâyesine Göre Ankara ve Kırsalı (VI – VII. Yüzyıllar)

Abstract

The life story of Theodoros, who was born and lived in Sykeon, a village connected to the Anastasioupolis settlement, west of Ancyra (Ankara), the metropolis of Galatia Prima province, was completed approximately thirty years after Theodoros' death (613), based on Sykeon, by his student Eleusios/Georgios. The source, which has the characteristics of a hagiography, contains important historical and geographical information. The names of Sykeon and the surrounding villages are told miraculously that the villagers living in these villages see Theodoros as a savior, especially in the face of natural disasters. Theodoros' prestige in the countryside made the Saint a local power in the region, and this power attracted emperors, governors and generals, again with the contribution of Sykeon settlement on the main road connecting Constantinople to the east. However, during the invasion period the village was the scene of the arrival of the enemies due to its location. Saint’s life story contains important information about both the city of Ankara and its countryside. The life story of St. Theodoros provides information about the political and social situation in Ankara and its countryside just before the Sassanid invasion. In this respect, his life story is a reference work for the periods we examine. It also provides data on the life, economic activities and wildlife of the people in and around Sykeon. In our study, the data on the political, administrative and social life of Ankara and its countryside in the life story of Theodoros of Sykeon were tried to be interpreted in the light of other sources.
