Abstract

The purpose of the study is to identify the reading culture of immigrant children attending middle school. In the research, case study was chosen as a qualitative research method, and semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data. A sample of twelve immigrant students, attending different grades in middle school in Erzincan, was selected. The participants in the study consists of immigrant students who have come to Turkey from Syria or Afghanistan. Thematic analysis method was used for data analysis. The findings were addressed under four themes: “Between Basic Literacy and Reading Habits”, "Bridging Reading Culture with School", “Unconveyable Aspects within Family Emphasis” and “Meaning Attributed to Reading”. As a result of the themes, it emerged that most immigrant children have not yet developed a reading habit in terms of reading culture, and they are caught between basic literacy and reading habit, and factors such as family and school, along with Turkish as a second language, affect the reading culture of immigrant children, and they experience difficulties in basic literacy skills. In addition, it has been seen that activities related to reading at school affect children in different ways and family is one of the important factors that shape the reading culture
