Abstract

Ceramic has an important place in daily life. In daily life, ceramics are encountered in all areas of social life, especially in food culture. Ceramics are produced for commercial and local purposes. It is seen that both glazed and unglazed samples of commercial ceramics have decoration and a high workmanship quality. It is seen that the production of unglazed ceramics for functional purposes is carried out in many regions in order to meet the daily needs of the region. These ceramics are made with the understanding of mass production for the purpose of use and are generally undecorated or simply decorated. A large number of unglazed ceramics were also found during the 2022 Bitlis Castle excavations. This group of locally produced ceramics is dated to the Late Ottoman Period, considering both the form characteristics and the cultural layer in which they were captured. Unglazed ceramics consist of cooking, storage, service pots as well as lighting pot types. In addition, imported examples are also encountered among unglazed ceramics. The unglazed ceramics found during the excavations provide important information about the cultural and socio-economic structure of Bitlis Castle. It also provides important inferences about food culture.
