Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the pronunciation errors of Syrian students in the fourth grade of primary school in Turkey. The survey model was used in the design of the study. The study group consists of 25 Syrian students, 13 girls and 12 boys, aged 10 to 12, who attend a primary school in the province of Hatay during the 2022-2023 academic year. In this study, which was carried out to determine the pronunciation errors of the Syrian students, the survey model was used in the design of the study. Four of the speaking topics at A1-A2 level prepared by the Yunus Emre Institute and used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language were chosen, and students were allowed to make impromptu speeches. Conversations recorded with a voice recorder were evaluated according to the pronunciation error types form created in line with the relevant literature and expert opinion. The data obtained by the observation technique were analyzed with the descriptive analysis technique. According to the findings obtained from the research, it was concluded that all of the students made pronunciation mistakes. The most frequently made pronunciation errors were identified as lowering or skipping the phoneme (n=25; f=263) and distortion of the phoneme (n=25; f=236), while the usage of vernacular dialect (n=8; f=55) was found to be the least committed.
