Abstract

As important as cooperation is for the continuity of communication, the existence of a common context, experiences and common knowledge between speakers is just as important. To ensure the fluency of the written or spoken text and to maintain communication between the speakers, the mutually presented information must be at the default level. This information, which requires prior acceptance between the parties to the communication, constitutes presuppositions. Although not as much as intuitions, which are an element of implicit meaning, presuppositions also serve as a part of this meaning field, but they also approach explicit meaning in terms of carrying traces in the surface structure. It is seen that two approaches, semantic and pragmatic, are adopted in the studies on presupposition. While the semantic approach follows the traces of linguistic markers, the pragmatic approach argues that presuppositional meanings should be extracted from the context. Although a semantic approach is adopted in this study, the meanings provided by the utterances and determined by linguistic signifiers are also supported by the context. Based on intuitively generated utterances, the properties of presuppositions are listed as follows: negation and sustainability, consensuality, belonging to the speaker and appropriateness, indisputability and certainty, presenting superficial appearances, entailment content, non-focalisation, and referentiality. The linguistic elements that reflect all these features and support the presuppositional proposition presented by the speaker in the utterance are classified as morphological, lexical and syntactic markers. This study provides a basis for presenting the appearance of presuppositional markers in historical dialects of the Turkish language and literary texts (corpus-based) selected from different periods of Turkish.
