Abstract

From mythology to the epic, epic to folk tales, many genres, such as folk narratives that emerged and developed within the same cultural circle, have been influenced by and been the source of each other at times. This interaction, which begins with mythology and is also reflected in the epic and other genres, is an essential richness of the Turkish folk narrative tradition. Saltuknâme, which is one of the recent Turkish epics under the influence of Islam, attracts attention because it contains elements from numerous folk narratives. The epic in question has motifs from mythology, fairy tales, and legends, as well as epic. Saltuk Ghazi, who is primarily an epic hero, sometimes turns into a fairy tale hero, sometimes into a hero from the mythic period, and sometimes into a hero of legend or myth within an epic text. The reason for this transformation is the large number of motifs belonging to other genres in the content of the epic text. The present study aims to reexamine Saltuknâme, which is the last link in the chain of epics that emerged in Anatolian geography after Islam, to exemplify the genres in Turkish folk narratives being influenced by and providing references for each other.
