Korkut Ata Türkiyat Araştırmaları Dergisi

Abstract

“Mondegreens” are strings of words that result from the mishearing or misinterpretation of a phrase or lyric. Various language researches have been carried out on “mondegreens” in many languages other than Turkish and their phonetic or phonological properties have been revealed. In this study, Turkish “mondegreens” were discussed from a linguistic point of view and the phonetic or phonological reasons for their emergence were tried to be evaluated in terms of the Turkish language. While doing this, the literature review on “mondegreens” was mentioned, the methods and objectives of the study were explained and many phonetic or phonological interpretations were put forward through various “mondegreen” examples selected from Turkish. Thus, the reasons for the emergence of Turkish “mondegreens” and their linguistic characteristics were brought to the attention and various determinations were expressed about the structure of mishearings in the Turkish language, which can be considered as an obstacle to ensuring a successful communication. Revealing the structures of the Turkish “mondegreen”s and the reasons for their occurence will enable the comparison of the “mondegreen” structures in other languages with those in Turkish. In this way, it will contribute to understanding the elements of successful communication by preparing an environment for making common inferences about the characteristic features of mishearings in various languages
