Korkut Ata Türkiyat Araştırmaları Dergisi

Abstract

Traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) is a knowledge system that is transmitted across generations and includes local communities’ relationships with nature and their knowledge about the environment. This knowledge has been shaped by observation, experience and oral transmission over many years and has played an important role in sustainable natural resource management and the protection of ecosystems. In line with TEK research, which is a rich source of information and practice for sustainable natural resource management, it is anticipated that the environmental knowledge and experiences of local communities can be integrated into modern sustainability strategies and make significant contributions to the protection and sustainable use of natural resources. Therefore, the protection, documentation and transfer of TEK to future generations are of vital importance for the success of sustainability efforts. In this research, folk meteorology and folk calendar, which are among the variables of TEK in the universe of Mersin Yörüks, were discussed. The folk calendar and folk meteorology beliefs, precautions and rituals of Yörüks, which were transmitted from generation to generation within the scope of TEK, were investigated. Within the scope of the research, it was determined that traditional ecological knowledge still maintains its vitality in today’s modern life.
